  • What is the ideal salt range? The ideal salt range will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and often times from model to model.
  • AutoPilot: The ideal range for AutoPilot brand chlorine generator systems is 3000-3500 PPM with a minimum of 2500 PPM. AutoPilot systems will stop producing chlorine if the salt level drops below 1900 PPM.
  • High Salt Levels: Salt levels above 6000 PPM are not normally recommended. If the salt level becomes too high the only way to remove salt is to partially drain the pool and add new water to dissolve the salt content.
  • Ideal Type of Salt: It is important to use Sodium Chloride (NacL) salt that is greater than 99% pure. Acceptable types of salt include granular food grade, water softener pellets or solar salt flakes. Salt can usually be found at building supply stores, warehouse clubs and many Walmart locations.
  • Other Types of Salt: Water softener and solar salt will have a slower dissolve rate than food grade salt. Rock salt and granular salt with iodine or rust preventatives should not be used as they will cause staining. While not recommended, granular salt containing anti-caking additives such as YPS (Yellow Prussiate of Soda) or Sodium Ferrocyanide can be used. However, these mixtures - if not mixed and dissolved immediately - may cause a localized tint to the water or yellow staining of the pool/spa finish.
  • Adding the Salt: Add salt directly to the pool and try to get it over the main drain (if main drain is present and working). If adding several hundred pounds of salt it is recommended to run the pump 24 hours. Do not allow salt to pile up in one location, without brushing, as staining may occur.
  • Always test the water for the current salt content before adding salt! There may even be salt left behind from traditional chlorine in pools that salt has not been manually added to.
